Documents McGinnis's 2 1/2-year overseas assignment during World War II. Includes vivid descriptions of living and working conditions in North Africa in an all-tent hospital when temperatures soared as high as 116 degrees. Speaks of working 16-18 hour shifts 7 days a week for 8 months, and coping with a scarce water supply while caring for malaria patients. After being transferred to Italy, McGinnis endured daily bombing raids in Naples, but also enjoyed "R & R" in the beautiful resort towns of Sorrento and Capri. Mentions nurses' training received in Texas before the War, administering the first penicillin drugs, and working with captured German doctors and nurses. Also includes brief discussion of her post-war experiences, including her promotion to the rank of captain, proposal from a fellow officer, and resulting marriage and family.
